Lucky ID/Lottery Manipulation (for Master Ball)

Post by entrpntr » Sun Nov 20, 2016 12:43 am

Overview

Lucky ID (LID) manipulation in GSC is similar to Trainer ID manipulation (link to thread), with the following caveat: if an LID is stored in the game's save data, the game will reuse that LID upon New Game selection.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Save data can only be cleared by pressing Up+Select+B on the title screen; when you press New Game afterwards, a new LID will be stored in the game's save data until you specifically clear ALL save data (thru the Up+Select+B screen), even if you do not save in-game.

Thus, the generalized approach to LID manipulation is:
  1. Clear all save data
  2. Perform TID manipulation to aim for a frame with a specific LID
  3. Repeat steps 1+2 until you hit the frame
  4. Do as many resets as you like, your LID will remain as is
To win the Master Ball, one of your party pokemon's TID's must match all 5 digits of the LID. You could manipulate an LID and then do TID manipulation for each reset thereafter, but the favored approach should be to manipulate the LID that matches Kenya's TID (01001). That way, you don't need to aim for a specific frame on each reset, and you can save time by setting options pre-New Game selection.

Crystal setup

Right now, there is a working lottery manip in Crystal that gets the 01001 LID (a Gold one will come in the future). This works on both console (GBA/GBP) and emulator (Gambatte-speedrun). You aim to get TID 27623, like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS-pCvclxS0. All but one input in the intro is buffered; the other input must be timed, and has a 4 frame window for success. To spell out the procedure:
  1. Hard reset
  2. Hold START through the copyright text and title screen
  3. Switch to B to back out of the main menu, then switch back to START to re-enter the title screen
  4. Repeat the above step five additional times
  5. Wait 760 frames/12.7 seconds to press B (use the game audio cue or a timer for consistency; it's ~32.4s on emulator, ~34.6s from hard reset on Game Boy Player, or 34.99s if you use Start+B+X on GCN)
  6. Switch to START to re-enter the main menu
  7. Repeat step 3 an additional three times
  8. Switch to A to select New Game
To clarify, you back out of the main menu 6 times before you start waiting; afterwards, you back out 4 more times (one of these includes the timed B press).

To help calibrate for individual setups, here is a listing of TIDs to see how much you missed by. (NOTE: Not all have been checked on console, so a few of these may be off by either 1-2 or 255-257.)

Early Frames (each RNG frame here is 4 GameBoy frames or about .067 sec):
-5: 07882
-4: 49552
-3: 25109
-2: 15747
-1: 17345

±0: 27623 (Target Frame)

Late Frames

+2: 13989
+3: 61494
+4: 22288

Disclaimers

(1) ***EDIT: If you save your game after hitting the TID/LID, then you only have ~24 hours before the game regenerates the LID, which will require performing the manip again. The preferred approach should be to reset the game without saving. You will need to set options before each run, but it appears the LID will remain intact until you get a run past Lance (assuming you don't otherwise save the game).

(2) I am not sure if this setup works on carts that have dead batteries (and I'm generally unsure of the implications of having a dead battery). (***EDIT: Reportedly, LID manip has worked fine for runners with carts that have dead batteries.)

(***EDIT: Shortly after this post, an improved lottery manip was found in Gold. The newer manip should be the preferred method for runners; see the next post in the thread for the full detail. The video link for this manip is dead and has been removed.)
[+] Old Gold setup
There is now a working setup for lottery manip in Gold that gets the 01001 LID. This works on both console (GBA/GBP) and emulator (Gambatte-speedrun). Before attempting it, make sure to read the general steps in the above post.

For this manip, you aim to get TID 28799, like so: <dead link>.
  4. Repeat the above step ten additional times
  5. Wait 496 frames/8.0 seconds to press B (use the game audio cue or a timer for consistency; it's ~32.8s from hard reset on Game Boy Player, or 33.2s if you use Start+B+X on GCN)
  6. Switch to START to re-enter the main menu
  7. Repeat step 3 an additional three times
  8. Switch to A to select New Game
To clarify, you back out of the main menu 11 times before you start waiting; afterwards, you back out 4 more times (one of these includes the timed B press).

Since the Gold intro goes very fast, it's easy to mess this up when starting out. I recommend counting how many times you hit the title screen to keep track of your "backout" count. I also recommend releasing B earlier than is intuitive when backing out of the New Game menu. If you hold B too long, then you can easily get screwed by double inputs, and not be able to press B the next time you enter the New Game menu.

To help calibrate for individual setups, here is a listing of TIDs to see how much you missed by. (NOTE: Not all have been checked on console, so a few of these may be off by either 1-2 or 255-257.)

Improved Gold setup

Shortly after the previous post, a faster/easier to execute 01001 LID manip was found. This works on both console (GBA/GBP) and emulator (Gambatte-speedrun). Before attempting it, make sure to read the general steps in the first post.

For this manip, you aim to get TID 28166, like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTNJYQ1tYC8. All but one input in the intro is buffered; the other input must be timed, and has a 4 frame window for success. To spell out the procedure:
  1. Hard reset
  2. Don't hold any buttons through the GameFreak screen
  3. Hold START on the black screen after the GameFreak screen, and hold it through the title screen
  4. Switch to B to back out of the main menu, then switch back to START to re-enter the title screen
  5. Repeat the above step four additional times
  6. Wait 188 frames/3.15 seconds to press B (use the game audio cue or a timer for consistency; it's -23.4s from hard reset on emulator, ~25.6s from hard reset on Game Boy Player, or 26.0s if you use Start+B+X on GCN)
  7. Switch to START to re-enter the main menu
  8. Switch to A to select New Game
To clarify, you back out of the main menu 5 times before you start waiting, and the timed B press is the 6th and final time you back out of the main menu.

Since the Gold intro goes very fast, it's easy to mess this up when starting out. I recommend counting how many times you hit the title screen to keep track of your "backout" count. I also recommend releasing B earlier than is intuitive when backing out of the New Game menu. If you hold B too long, you can easily get screwed by double inputs and not be able to press B the next time you enter the New Game menu.

Additionally, the START press in the intro needs to closely follow the fade to black after the Game Freak screen (but not too closely; you should see a frame of the intro flash and hear one 'Shellder tone').

To help calibrate for individual setups, here is a listing of TIDs to see how much you missed by. (NOTE: Not all have been checked on console, so a few of these may be off by either 1-2 or 255-257.)
