marathon / race strats

Post by Decon082 » Mon Aug 10, 2015 2:18 pm

needed somewhere to paste this at work, feel free to ignore, or ask me any questions

General notes:

- Always plan to sell TM34
- The timeloss is very minor since you can swap around it
- Having an extra Super Potion and X Speed can help a lot
- On 0-2 DV speed, you can buy 2 extra X Speeds instead of the Super Potion

- Recommended save spots:
- Before Diglett/Sandshrew trainer
- Before Misty
- Before Surge (cans?)
- Before Giovanni
- Before Lorelei
- Before Lance
- Before Champion if on Kinesis/Blizzard strats

- Diglett/Sandshrew save can be done before Brock instead
- Its main purpose is to prevent backtracking through forest
- If you took Pewter Center then you can skip saving here

- I usually skip the Surge save, but it's a huge timeloss if you die and have to go back
- After getting Fly, there's no need to save because backtracking is quick
- You must save for Giovanni though because he cannot kill your Flyer (~7 minute loss)
- Lorelei save isn't required but you'd need to save an X Accuracy if you die

- For Blaine, you can set up your X Attack on either Ninetales or Rapidash
- Setting up on Ninetales is risky because Confuse Ray + Flamethrower (crit/burn)
- Setting up on Rapidash ensures you won't die, but it can waste time with Fire Spin
- I recommend setting up on Rapidash to minimize the risk

- Similarly, you can set up one of your extra X Speeds on Silph Giovanni for safety
- Giving Nidorino an extra turn can waste time, but you outspeed Persian and OHKO
- This prevents the risk of Growl and then not killing Nidoqueen
- Persian can kill you and Nidoqueen can kill or paralyze you

Flareon and Vaporeon Strats:

- The normal item buy for Flareon strats should be as follows:

4 Poke Balls
6 Potions
1 Parlyz Heal

9 Super Potions

10 X Accuracy
8 X Speed
3 X Attack
5 X Special

~$34 left over

- With Vaporeon strats, you start with $175 less money
- You need to buy one extra X Accuracy
- Dropping one Poke Ball, one Super Potion and one X Speed gives you enough
- This also means you cannot try yoloballing Nidoran

-175

3 Poke Balls +200
6 Potions
1 Parlyz Heal

8 Super Potions +700

11 X Accuracy -950
7 X Speed +350
3 X Attack
5 X Special

= +125

~$159 left over

- You could also sell the Parlyz Heal if unused
- This allows you to buy 4 Poke Balls, but is riskier
- If you paralzye Nidoran, you need to buy one less X Speed or X Attack
- Dropping an X speed provides no backup for Lorelei
- Dropping an X Attack forces you to get Blaine's TM after battle

Making room for Blizzard TM:

- Use Carbos in Mansion or toss Max Ether/Potions

- If 0-4 DV Speed and 9-15 Special, use all Carbos in Mansion to make room for Blizzard
- If 5-7 DV Speed and 9-15 Special, toss Max Ether instead
- Currently I am thinking to always skip Mom Heal on 5-7 DV
- Use your last Potions in this menu to give more HP for Blaine
- If you have no Potions left, toss Max Ether and take Mom Heal

- On Blizzard strats you may also want to have an extra Full Restore
- Faster menu for teaching Blizzard, plus extra safety in E4
- Kinesis strats always buy Full Restores, so we can just say that low speed requires them

When to toss Parlyz Heal?

- Useful to keep if out of Potions
- Tossing in an early heal menu is fastest
- Nice to have if paralyzed on Oddish/Bulbasaur to save Full Restore
- In this case we would probably sell in Celadon, i think we're full for Fly otherwise

1 potion
2 bike
3 fossil
4 ss ticket
5 cut
6 elixer
7 x acc
8 x attack
9 x speed
10 x special
11 tm07
12 tm13
13 tm48
14 fly
15 pokedoll
16 super repels
17 super potions
18 fresh water
19 full restore
20 parlyz heal
21 (max ether)

- So if getting Carbos (3-4, 8-11, 15DV Speed), we can keep Parlyz Heal longer
- However we must get rid of it before getting HM03 from Safari
- This means we can toss it in the last repel menu to move our cursor back up
- Since selling Parlyz Heal gets us nothing useful, this should be more optimal

-tm07
-tm48
-tm13
+rare candy
-pokedoll
+pokeflute
-fresh water
+carbos
+card key
+gold teeth
+hm03

Verdict:
- Speed DV 0-2, 5-7, 12-14 = Toss Parlyz Heal in heal menu before Brock
- Speed DV 3-4, 8-11, 15 = Toss Parlyz Heal in second Safari repel menu
- OR JUST KEEP IT THE WHOLE GAME AND SKIP MAX ETHER YOU FUCKING DUMBASS
- I guess you should only get Max Ether on 5-7DV but even then it's meh

- So keep Parlyz Heal unless you need Carbos, then toss in Safari
- If you have to use it on 0 Carbos then get Max Ether instead
