Rules for this specific area

Post by Dabomstew » Sun Jan 31, 2016 9:30 pm

Welcome to the Unofficial Leaderboards forum! This forum is intended to serve as a semi-organized home for leaderboards of unofficial categories of unmodified games and/or ROM hack categories (which are by nature unofficial).

Rules are one topic per leaderboard category. The topic creator serves as the de-facto "mod" of the leaderboard and is responsible for its upkeep. Replies to the topic should consist of discussion of that particular category and/or leaderboard submissions. Please do not start topics that are not meant to be used as leaderboards. Discussion of the way this place is run / future unofficial category policies can be carried out in this topic in the Policy forum.

Timing rules and other specific rules for the individual leaderboards are up to the topic creator/category runners, but keep it consistent between runs on the board. It is recommended but not required that you use similar timing methods to our official leaderboards - RTA from "New Game" to last input. But if you believe the category is better off forcing single segment and/or using the in-game timer then that is ultimately up to your judgement.

Your category should have at least 2 completed runs before you post a topic. These runs should preferably be done by different people, but if not the second run should definitely be an improved PB over the first.

There is one semi-official rule that applies to ROM hack leaderboards, and that is that you should avoid making leaderboards for ROMhacks which the creator has blatantly said are incomplete, unless the hack hasn't been updated in years. It is true that these leaderboards are intended to be not very serious and ROM hack leaderboards will always have issues with all the different versions released. However, beta hacks are generally not a very good choice for "competition" due to later releases usually making very wide changes that alter the speedrun massively and render runs completely incomparable to ones done on earlier versions.

Disputes regarding leaderboards in this forum should first be raised inside the topic itself. If you cannot come to a resolution between yourselves, you can contact a member of staff and we will attempt to mediate, but do understand that these unofficial leaderboards are not very high priority so things might not get done very quickly.

This forum's continued existence isn't a guarantee. It will stick around if it is actually used actively by the community, but if interest rapidly wanes it may be removed and/or archived. Do also note that this forum's creation should not make you think in any way that we are going to start adding more categories or ROM hacks to speedrun.com, this is not in our plans at all for the foreseeable future.

After a brief discussion with leaderboard staff, the following rule is being added for this forum:
Randomizer leaderboards are not allowed. The randomizer leaderboard that was posted earlier today has been removed.

The reasoning behind this is that "optimizing" a randomizer category mostly comes down to getting the best ROM possible (Good starter, easy trainers, etc). This goes against what we feel a leaderboard should be about. While randomizers are fun to race in one-off contexts where everyone has the same ROM, grinding them out for the best time possible is neither overly competitive nor very enjoyable for most people.

Also, just to make sure: ROM hack leaderboards must be for a publicly released ROM hack. If the link to a ROM hack that has a leaderboard goes down, an alternative patch link must be provided by the leaderboard creator for it to remain open. You should also note the guidelines above regarding leaderboards for incomplete hacks.
