Re: Masterball/Entei Problems

Entei is 26% to appear on the first try. The success rate of subsequent, manipped attempts is unknown because the community hasn't looked into Gen 2 RNG in depth (it's not as easy to solve as Gen 1). In any case, it might require you to hit a certain frame, so failures could just be execution errors...

Re: Penalty for Emulator and GBI runs for r/b/y 151.

It's probably too late to ban GBI, so a penalty sounds like the best solution.

Wild Zubat OHKO chances by DV

The attached chart shows your chances of OHKOing wild Zubats with Horn Attack at various levels and Attack DVs. Although high-level Zubats pose a threat with Supersonic, your chances to OHKO them are reasonable, thanks the tremendous variance of wild Pokemon DVs. So it might be a good play to kill L...

Re: Revisiting Timing Methods for Pokemon Speedruns (IGT vs RTA)

As for the fundamental difference, it's not our opinions on time that differ. There are two models of time: the game's model, and the player's model. We just happen to have games where it doesn't really make sense to have categories for both, and the disagreement is over which timing method is the ...

Re: Revisiting Timing Methods for Pokemon Speedruns (IGT vs RTA)

"Time without loads" just doesn't make sense to me. We route, run and stream using real timers. We talk using the terminology of real time. There are no significant flaws to using real time as an official measure for Pokemon speedruns, unlike in series such as Sonic. As Entr said on Discord, our opi...

Re: Revisiting Timing Methods for Pokemon Speedruns (IGT vs RTA)

I am in favor of RTA. We now have evidence that the in-game timer for Gens 1-3 does not count all frames of gameplay. This runs contrary to the definition of a speedrun: to beat a game as fast as possible. This would be mostly insignificant if the excluded frames came in the form of unavoidable lag;...

Re: Pokemon Speedrun Leaderboard Change Opinion Rant

My opinion: As implied by the name, a leaderboard should be a place for the leading times of a category, not a compilation of PBs. Popular categories such as Red glitchless should have a minimum time, such as sub-2:00, and less popular categories should list the top 10 times. There are no benefits t...

Re: RNG Manipulating Squirtle

MKDasher's program is easier to use than RNG Reporter: http://forums.pokemonspeedruns.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=499 However, the timing issue may be related to your emulator, as emulator timings are different than console. I haven't run GBA games on emulator, so hopefully someone else can help you the...

Re: Simple Questions & Answers

I looked into Dugtrio in 2014. Slash is a great move for the early game; sadly, Dugtrio isn't available until Vermilion. You might save time in a few fights, but you'd lose a lot of time after Surge because Nidoking OHKOs almost everything and can hold red bar as a result. Dugtrio would have slower ...

Probably done running this game for a while, so I'll dump some of my recent notes/thoughts here. I think the best cluster of actually good Mudkips is this one: *15657 | Hasty 2/25/29/30/31/23 *15658 | Docile 23/30/31/30/17/29 15659 | Bashful 29/30/17/2/20/1 15660 | Timid 1/2/20/24/15/15 15661 | Impi...

Re: Poll: Revisiting Instant Text Ruling for Any% Glitchless

Not a runner, not even that big a fan of gen I glitchless but my $0.02: If it has been decided that instant text is not a glitch (and personally I feel that it is no worse than, say, 100% accurate OHKO moves, as both are coding errors rather than design flaws ), then it seems a little perverse to a...

Re: Pokemon Generation 3 Starter Manipulation Tool

I have a few suggestions to make the RNG manip tool easier to use in runs. 1) Make the "Pokemon Found List" box expandable. If this is already a feature, I'm not sure how to use it. But I'm frequently having to scroll up and down to see all the Mudkips/Squirtles that might be considered, and given h...

Re: Poll: Revisiting Instant Text Ruling for Any% Glitchless

My vote is: Neutral I want to clear up a couple of misconceptions. 1. The Mega Punch route, which was one of the original reasons that several runners disliked instant text, has been shown to be suboptimal. Getting Water Gun is a 10-second sink, the extra turns saved on bridge are minor time saves b...

Re: Pokemon ruby speedrun - no mudkip - advice needed

1) This is a good approach, but it shouldn't take 30-40 extra minutes. I'd suggest watching Ryziken's Emerald PB with Torchic to find improvements: http://www.twitch.tv/ryziken/v/34165081 2) This is a tougher fight in Sapphire than Emerald. I'd try to get to Lv. 40 and/or get a Sunny Day off from Ca...

That's the right way to do DSum, yes.

Mashing is the only way to buy fast. I use a GameCube controller and switch to my right hand when buying 7+ of an item. Keyboard users usually have an easier time.

Re: Simple Questions & Answers

A text box is 13 frames plus the number of characters. So a NVE shake animation is 38 extra frames. A shake animation is 50 extra frames. Moving the move-selection cursor up 1 or down 1 is roughly 4 frames.
